When 5kVA Is Not Quite Enough, But You Still Want a Silent Diesel Generator

There is an awkward gap in backup power. A small portable unit will not carry the whole house or the whole workshop, but a cabinet generator on a skid is more machine than you need and more money than you want to spend.

The Kubota GL9000D sits precisely in that gap. It delivers 8kVA continuous at 240 volts, drawing 33.3 amps, from the same compact Lowboy 3 frame as its smaller sibling. Three cylinders instead of two, a bigger radiator and still only 67 decibels at seven metres. At 280 kilograms it is still a one-forklift machine.

What an 8kva Diesel Generator Actually Runs

Eight kilovolt-amps of single-phase power is the point where backup stops being about survival and starts being about carrying on as normal. A full household including refrigeration, lighting, power circuits, a pump and a hot water service. A workshop running lighting, compressors and hand tools together rather than one at a time.

For commercial use it covers a small shop or cafe through an outage, a site office with its own lighting and equipment or a rural shed running refrigeration and pumps. The D722 is a three-cylinder water-cooled diesel, which is what lets it hold that output hour after hour rather than in short bursts.

Built to Be Left Alone

The GL9000D belongs to Kubota's Lowboy 3 range and the design brief is plainly about generators nobody wants to babysit.

Engine and alternator are directly coupled, so there is no drive belt to check or replace. Oil changes stretch to two hundred hours. Every service point sits on one side of the machine, so checking oil, fuel, coolant and battery means opening one door rather than walking a circuit.

The Deep Sea DSE4520 controller carries a backlit display showing engine hours, speed and alternator condition at a glance and accepts a two-wire remote start so a solar or off-grid system can call the generator itself when the batteries drop.

Safety and Protection as Standard

A Residual Current Device is fitted at the factory, not offered as an extra, giving proper protection against electric shock and reducing the risk of an electrical fire. A 40 amp main breaker and three 16 amp RCBOs come factory fitted and all three 15 amp receptacles are IP66 rated.

The engine shuts itself down automatically if oil pressure drops or water temperature climbs too high. It shuts down again if the engine room door is opened while running and there is an emergency stop button on the outside of the enclosure where you can actually reach it.

Key Features

  • 8kVA continuous single-phase output: 240V at 33.3 amps, 8.8kVA standby.
  • 67dB at 7 metres: oversized muffler, larger radiator and a slower fan keep it quiet under load.
  • Kubota D722 diesel engine: three-cylinder, water-cooled, built by Kubota to run under sustained load.
  • 8.5 hours on one tank: 28 litres at 3.3 litres per hour under full load.
  • Direct-coupled design: no drive belt to tension, adjust or replace.
  • Deep Sea DSE4520 digital controller: backlit display, engine hour counter, pre-heat and idle control.
  • Two-wire remote auto start: ready for solar and off-grid systems out of the box.
  • Three 15A IP66 outlets: with individual RCBO protection on each.
  • Single-sided maintenance access: oil, fuel, coolant and battery all reached from one side.
  • Lifting eye and forklift pockets: 280kg moved without drama.
  • TVCS combustion system: cleaner emissions, meeting US EPA Tier 2.

Is the GL9000D the Right Size for You?

Sizing a diesel generator comes down to what has to start at the same moment, not just what has to keep running. At 8kVA single phase the GL9000D covers a full home, a working shed or workshop, a small retail or hospitality site, a site office or rural refrigeration and pumping.

If your load is lighter, the GL6000D at 5.5kVA does the same job in a smaller frame for less. If you need to start a large motor or run any three-phase equipment, step up to the Kubota SQ and KJ ranges, which run from 11.2kVA to 30kVA in single and three phase.
